However, in a scientific text, the words are often complex and long, so each line, tends to be more extensive.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>Basically:<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-weight: normal;\"><strong>Narrow text:<\/strong> they&#8217;re less work for the eye to move from one line to another, but in turn, they decrease the speed of reading, since the reader isn&#8217;t able to see enough information at once to start linking ideas.<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<p><strong>When people read they skip small groups of about 5 to 10 characters at a time,<\/strong> and the average <strong>eye makes about 10-12 jumps<\/strong> per line. With this info, we can calculate that readers might consider only 70 characters of the line.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Wider Text<\/strong>: if a line is too long, the reader&#8217;s eye will have <strong>difficulty focusing on the text<\/strong> and make it difficult for the eye to move from one line to another. However,<strong> it allows for faster reading.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<p>To conclude: Derek Halpern indicates that <strong>narrow text is not very practical and a really long one doesn&#8217;t allow for fast reading comprehension.<\/strong> Therefore, somewhere around<strong>100 characters<\/strong> (500 &#8211; 600 pixels wide) is recommended to ensure speed and comprehension.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-weight: normal;\"><strong>If you want to see how the width you&#8217;ve decided on for your post,<\/strong> will appear, there&#8217;s a page that lets you to see the final result, by entering a few pieces of info: font size, number of characters per line (CPL), or paragraph width, in pixels.
